IITians Association Completes 2009 Successfully and Sets Sail for 2010

The IITians Association of Australia (IITAA) held its Annual General Meeting on 15 November 2009 at Castle taj Indian Restaurant, Castle Hill.  The AGM was attended by over 45 Members and their family members.

 The Meeting was opened by the ITTAA President Dr Ashok Manglick. Dr Manglick thanked the members for their support and the Executive Committee for the excellent contribution during 2009. 

Dr Manglick said that over the past year, IITAA has gained a high degree of credibility and recognition within the Indian community in Australia and also with the Indian High Commission and Indian Consulate General.  The Association is now regularly invited to participate in events host by the High Commission and the Consulate General and its opinion and advice are actively sought on a wide range of issues. 

He advised that the IITAA Advisory Board has been set up with internationally renowned IITians as members such as Mr Arjun Malhotra, Chairman, Headstrong Corporation, USA, Mr Gunjan Bagla, President, Pan IIT USA, Mr Rajat Gupta, Co-Chair, American India Foundation (AIF), USA, Mr Kumar Parakala, National President, Australian Computer Society and local identity Mr Neville Roach.

The IITAA Secretary Mr Inderjeet Singh Virdi elaborated upon the performance of IITAA over the past year.  He said that 13 new members joined the Association.  The many events organised by the Association included dinner event with Murmu who is planning to make a feature film on IIT with Amir Khan/Shahrukh Khan with music by Rehman; joint event with TiE featuring Arjun Malhotra, seminars by Neville Roach and Kartikay Sarabhai of Sarabhai Chemicals.  He said IITAA was invited to meet the visiting Indian Minister of External Affairs, participate in high level discussion regarding the Indian students’ issues and meeting with the India –Australia Parliamentary Group hosted by the High Commissioner Her Excellency Mrs Sujata Singh; and of course the successful Picnic and inaugural IITAA Deepavali Dinner which was very well received by members and their families.

A new feature of this year’s IITAA Annual Report was achievements by IITians in their social and professional lives.

The Treasurer Mr Gautam Batra, presented the Financial Report. The Association’s finances are in good shape.

The current Executive Committee was then declared elected unopposed by the Returning Officer.  Dr Ashok Manglick as President, Vivek Sheel as Vice President, Inderjeet Singh Virdi as Secretary, Gautam Batra as Treasurer and Dipankar Roy Choudhury, Premalal Kumarasiri, Neeraj Mathur and Bhupinder Chopra as members.

The AGM was followed by lunch.
